How Students Built a School Lunch App
Students at Eagles Landing School built a fully functional MVP application that allows students to vote on their school lunches, converting data into an admin portal for meal orders, recipes, and ingredient quantities.
The Problem: Unpredictable School Lunches
Every day, school cafeterias face a challenge: predicting what students actually want to eat. This leads to food waste on unpopular days and shortages when a favorite meal is served.
A group of innovative students at Eagles Landing School decided it was time to solve this problem with technology. They conceptualized and built the Daily Lunch Vote App (available at daily-lunch-vote.base44.app).
The Solution: A Two-Part Application
The students didn't just build a simple voting tool. They built a comprehensive system with two distinct sides:
- Student Interface: A mobile-friendly app allowing students to see upcoming menus and vote on their preferred meals.
- Admin Portal: A dashboard for cafeteria staff showing real-time voting data, total meal orders, associated recipes, and automatically calculated ingredient quantities.
The Development Journey
UX/UI Design
Designing an intuitive interface that students would actually want to use daily.
Database Logic
Connecting votes to recipes and calculating precise ingredient needs.
Deployment
Launching the MVP to the web so the school could begin testing it.
Seeing It In Action
The impact of the app was immediate. Not only did it give students a voice in their daily meals, but it also provided the school's administration with actionable data to reduce waste and optimize their budget.
